VoIP under 1000 feet of solid rock.
East Tennessee Zinc Co. (ETZC) operates three zinc metal mines in the East Tennessee area employing about five hundred people.  Metal mining differs from coal mining in that large tunnels are cut horizontally through solid rock.  Then they operate diesel trucks in a two way traffic fashion through these tunnels.  This results in shops and offices needing to operate underground which require communications.

Tadiran Telecom reseller, Ideacom Technologies (GA,TN) realized the challenges of providing conventional communication services underground.  Running subterranean copper wires down as much as 1,800 feet vertically and then horizontally for miles introduces problems with signal attenuation, noise, and most importantly lightning.  Ideacom installed an IPx Office, Voice over IP phones, and Teleport boxes on the customer's underground LAN which employed a non-conductive fiber backbone.  This eliminated all of the electrical problems associated with copper wire.  The result is clear voice communication and reliable faxes.

ETZC also operates a "Leaky Feeder" system throughout the mines.  This is basically a two-way walkie talkie system that is specifically made for the mining industry.  Ideacom has already provided Tadiran Teleport boxes to enable integration of the Leaky Feeder with the IPx Office..
Tadiran's VoIP technology has been the perfect solution to resolve communication problems that have plagued the mining industry for years.

With this success, ETZC joins Tadiran’s impressive list of satisfied mining sector customers (coal, zinc, metal alloys, diamonds, etc.) in various countries throughout the world, including Russia & CIS, China, India and the Ukraine.
